Five in a row! Big one today as we get to see some of the outer hull. The goal of the all the structural work to date has been to support the plates on the outer hull. Today, the focus is on just getting one of the many fins constructed along with a couple rows of outer hull. Here is a LeoCAD rendering of the planned build for today.

The main cylindrical part of the ship is 36 studs in diameter at the outer hull. The outer hull has 32-sides (a triacontadigon) which creates a nice “curved” surface profile. At this diameter, the circumference is 113.1 studs. For 32 sides, each side would have to be 3.53 studs. Half studs are tough to achieve so the sides of the outer hull alternate between 3 and 4 studs wide. The vertical turret that will have the communications array on top is 16-sided (a hexadecagon) with a diameter of 31 studs. This results in a circumference of 97.4 studs with an average side of 6.09 studs. 6-stud wide plates are used for this cylinder. The curve is not as smooth as the 32-sided main corridor but the rougher shape also helps differentiate this vertical component.
Overall there are 12 fins on this section of the ship. Two angled fins like the one completed today on the top and bottom, two tapered fins on the sides at 3 and 9 o’clock, four fins between the communication tower and the engine block and four large diagonal fins that run between the main and side corridors. The gap in the completed outer hull area will be used as an insertion point for these diagonal fins. More on this fin around Day 8. Here is the time-lapse video of the days construction.
Here is today’s progress photo. I noted that some of my photos are a little dark at the back. I upgraded the lighting today and hope it improves the image. Note that I completed the outer hull on the starboard side so it could be easier to see the build as opposed to the port side rendering above.

Smaller piece count today as we only completed 3 of the 32 sides of the main corridor and a couple on the communications tower. But a lot of new pieces. Moving forward, the structure (4657 total) and white (and soon to be red) outer hull pieces (135 total) will be tabulated separately. I have also moved to a using actual tables as opposed to text. Here are the outer hull pieces so far:

Moving forward, I am going to complete another nine sides of the main corridor outer hull myself off-camera as it is fairly repetitive work. Day 6 will feature the construction of the red 3 and 9 o’clock fins which will complete the top half of the outer hull. At that point, cylindrical shape will be much more visible.
